We would love to have a GUI designer on board. The skin used for Ember is quite horrible; I've made it myself, and I don't really have an eye for the aesthetic. If you want to contribute to Worldforge I would recommend that you use the General mailing list instead of this forum, as most of the development communication occurs there.
My day job is as a web developer. I'm most familiar with PHP and Javascript, but I regularly use Java also, and I've written things in C++, C#, and Lua in the past.
I'm one of those folks who's comfortable doing both code and graphics, though I favor the graphics side of things.
I'm lurking on the General mailing list now, and occasionally popping into the Purple IRC server.
Hmmm....Sorry to intrude, but I design things in CADD as a hobby, and I was wanting to make my own game. I'm mucking about looking at threads and going "huh???????" I have a clear notion of what I want to create, but no idea how to do it. I started learning C++ yesterday, and I'm a fast learner so.... I figure I ought to give this a whirl. How does one learn to use GUI to make things?
To create actual models for WorldForge you will need to use an external program. I think most of our recent contributors have used blender, which is a very sophisticated program. I think Erik understands a bit better than me how to use it, and what plugins are required if any to export models.
Ember has some great features for editing at a higher level, including the ability to edit terrain, manipulate and places objects in the world etc. If you make good progress with C++ you should be able to help Erik and the other Ember coders to create more builder features. In order to use these features you will need admin access to a server. You can do this by running your own copy of cyphesis, or getting an admin account one someone elses server. Dean has put up a public sandbox server which anyone can log into using the username "admin", password "admin".
