What's the status?
  • Hi there everyone. I guess I used to hang around this project for awhile, as you can tell by my join date, then I left with the impression that everyone had abandoned this project. So what's the status? Need any beta/alpha testing and/or bug reporting/ideas?
  • I'm new to the project myself so I'm probably not the best one to comment, but here is what I've seen in the last few months.

Ember is still being actively developed, and for me the latest version in development on git has improved a number of things in regards to performance.
Cyphesis just released a new version which includes a new fishing element and ocean object to the game world. I tried to help out by making some models for this new element, namely a sieve, fishing rod, tuna, bluegill, large mouth bass, pickerel. And now I'm working on a number of other items, structures, plants, and animals I think are needed most.

So the project is definitely not dead, it seems to have a slow but steady level of progress from what I've seen. If you do try things out and want to report bugs or add to ideas it looks like Launchpad https://launchpad.net/worldforge is the place to do it.

These forums are not a very good indication of activity, the mailing list, launchpad, or the irc channels seem like the most popular places for discussion.
    Hope that helps some.
  • Ok, thank you very much. Embre just crashes with an application error when ever I try to load a server.
  • Which version of Ember?
  • Well, the latest one. I just noticed now that when I try to join the server with the later version, it works fine up until it loads it, then it crashes. Then I noticed the other two servers with the same version never give me the choice of any player models.
  • Very likely old servers, look for mine I am running the very latest Server and I actively maintain mine, I never had any luck loading into any server older then version .20, the current Cyphesis is .21

Hmm after re reading your post I wonder if you aren't trying to load into mine, as every other server from mine currently in the list is older. You might have to toss your ember.log file on launchpad for Erik to look at as I've not experienced any crashing on Ember with servers .20 or greater, I have experienced the no character issue on the older servers though. It should be noted though that there are a few Ember versions out there 5.5 is the latest Windows version I have found, 5.6 is the latest linux release, and then there is 5.7 which is in development, and the one I prefer because of the performance gains it has for me. But you have to fetch it and compile it to use that one. Which one are you using?
  • Well, there aren't any .log files in any folders relating to world forge. Idk what to do.
  • look in ~/.ember there should be a logfile there, it will detail alot of things useful in figuring out where the problem might lie.

If you like you can come to IRC and I can help you in realtime a bit.
  • Ok, I will tomorrow. I live in EST just for the record.
  • Well, I'm in the chat room now.
  • Just as Demarii says the forums isn't very active. It's mainly set up because it's a format for communication that most people recognize, and it's a suitable introduction to the Worldforge community. The main part of communication happens either on the mailing lists or in irc. Note though that most current developers are European and are thus online mainly during evening CET.

If you want to follow the progress I would advice you to subscribe to the commit mailing list over at http://mail.worldforge.org/lists/listinfo/cvs . It's a bit inappropriately named "CVS", but in reality it records all commits to either CVS, SVN or git.
I'm myself mainly involved in developing Ember, and for this I keep a blog over at http://erikhjortsberg.blogspot.com/
    I also twitter at http://twitter.com/erik_hjortsberg

And if you want to get involved in the project I would advice using the general mailing list over at http://mail.worldforge.org/lists/listinfo/general
  • Awesome! I'm just kinda disappointed Ember doesn't work to well for me.
  • If you have an issue with Ember you should post your ~/.ember/ember.log somewhere I can see it.
  • Ya, I have never seen an ember.log file anywhere :S It looks like your posting a linux path there, is it different for windows?
  • The windows client is unfortunately a bit outdated. Main development happens on Linux, and we try to produce a Windows port when we can. However, this has been more than a year ago. I would advice you to run it on Linux instead.
